Exigence is the circumstance that causes someone to write about something. Exigence can stem from a situation, issue or event that happened. I never heard the term exigence before this semester but I was able to understand it pretty fast and would wonder why it was never discussed in any of my other english classes. One strong example of exigence was when my group was deciding what natural disaster to pick for our engineering proposal. We ended up writing about volcanos and our exigence stemmed from the massive volcano eruption in the Caribbean island of St. Vincent because it happened right as we were deciding topics. It was described as “apocalyptic” and reminded us how dangerous volcanoes really are so we thought of a way that we could help people from this.
